RHM Chapter Talks Business Talks from the Heart™
‘How to lead businesses during and Post COVID-19’?
The first of RHM Chapter Talks ‘Business Talks from the Heart™ went live yesterday and during our talks, several important issues came up around the three critical questions. I have put these up on the slide, sharing below.
Post-Pandemic is bringing with it massive challenges and radical changes for people at work and also in their personal lives. Radical changing needs radical creative thinking and sometimes the speed of change is crucial. You have got to move fast!! You may have the right knowledge, machinery and people, but you didn’t move fast enough and lost the business opportunity. You may not have had the team who could be innovative and creative to get the organisation moving with speed. Of course, you may not need speed all the time, but just sometimes, during a crisis or a pandemic, you may need to move fast. You need a team that is empowered, so as two heads are better than one sometimes, your empowered team of people can get to where you need to be.
One of the ways of managing the depression that the pandemic has brought about is to stay positive, innovative and creative. But, how do you bring about a culture of creativity and innovation in organisations? It’s not something that happens naturally, because people are cautious, sometimes even if they have the knowledge they do not want to contribute or be innovative. If they feel that they are not being listened to, valued, rewarded or treated with respect, they like to just keep their arms folded and their brains locked up!
People are an organisation’s asset and the source of knowledge and expertise. Evidence-based case studies including my own, suggests that one of the ways, an organisation can tap into the knowledge and expertise of people in their organisation is to empower people. One of the ways leaders can lead their businesses during the Post-pandemic is to empower their people. This shows the leader has the courage and compassion and is not only thinking about the survival of his/her organisation but also thinking about securing jobs, which gives out signals of trust to employees.
If organisations adopt an employee empowerment strategy, they can harness the innovative and creative talents of their people, including leaders and managers. But, a word of caution, leaders must have the knowledge about employee empowerment, what it means and how to implement it. Lack of a model for implementation has been the main fear of empowering people. Knowledge can eradicate fear and leaders can be innovative by finding out creative ways of empowering their employees.
Empowered employees feel they are trusted, valued, and treated with respect because they feel leaders believe in them by creating a culture of empowerment where they can take decisions and work with flexibility in order to be creative and innovative. They feel happy!
