I was delighted to give a talk at the Royal Bank of Scotland, Glasgow entrepreneur hub, on 27th November 2019 to entrepreneurs on team building and how important it is to build their skills as leaders and understand in what way Psychological Empowerment can help them to grow and develop so that they can create an empowered team culture. When entrepreneurs, (men or women) begin to grow their business they need to employ and start recruiting people, which is a new venture for many entrepreneurs who have never employed or managed people or worked in HR. This can be a daunting phase for many entrepreneurs!
The model that I have created can enable entrepreneurs to be better leaders and teach them how to create a culture of empowerment so that employees can be better team players, confident at decision-making and have the ability to get on with their jobs which can free entrepreneurs to do other things. It also helps to clarify the vision and purpose of the business, motivates employees and builds their strengths and capabilities. My model is called ‘An Understanding of Psychological Empowerment and the Impact on Survival, Sustainability and Success for Entrepreneurs’.
Psychological Empowerment is a set of positive psychological states that is necessary to feel a sense of control in relation to work. It can enable individuals to make suitable decisions, take responsibilities and enhance their self-efficacy, self-esteem and self-confidence and more… I term these as ‘Entrepreneurial Distinctive Skills’.
A lack of psychological empowerment can create a negative impact on business, which creates low morale, is costly to businesses and makes employees feel unhappy. The unhappiness becomes contagious and spreads throughout the business, leading to disempowerment amongst employees and creates stress for entrepreneurs.
The key benefits of the ‘Survival, Sustainability and Success’ Model is it helps to empower the mind, enhances imagination and creativity, gives a feeling of freedom leading to a feel-good factor and enabling the entrepreneur to develop their business with agility and fluidity.
